Karbolit has purchased green electricity certificates

In December 2023, JSC Karbolit, a subsidiary of JSC Metafrax Chemicals, made a deal with Carbon Zero LLC for the purchase of 150 thousand of green electricity certificates, which will allow a 100% compensation for the carbon footprint from the activities of the sewage pumping station of the enterprise.

The initiator of the purchase of green certificates was Simon Vikhnin, Head of the working group on sustainable development, Director of Legal Affairs of JSC Metafrax Chemicals. Maksim Batuyev, Managing Director of JSC Karbolit, supported this idea. As a result of the discussion, it was decided to compensate for the carbon footprint from the activities of the sewage pumping station of JSC Karbolit, which electricity consumption is 150 thousand kW per year. Yulia Yershova, a leading expert on sustainable development issues, supervised the deal making process, and the legal service of JSC Metafrax Chemicals accompanied the development of the first such agreement in the practice of Metafrax Group.

Carbon Zero LLC is the first company in Russia that created a voluntary standard for green electricity certificates after the termination of international certification systems. The standard was approved at the meeting of the climate working group related to the ESG Alliance in January 2022 and is currently the only recognized format of green certificates available for electricity consumers in Russia.

“The gradual transition to electricity consumption from renewable energy sources is one of the many measures being implemented in the Metafrax Group to achieve sustainable development goals. In the future, after evaluating the results of the pilot project for the purchase of green certificates by Karbolit, it’s planned to consider the possibility of introducing similar practices at other holding sites," said Simon Vikhnin, Head of the working group on sustainable development at Metafrax Chemcials.

Currently, approximately 340 kg of greenhouse gas emissions account for the production of 1 MWh of electricity in Russia. The production of electricity from renewable energy sources is associated with a number of positive climatic, environmental and social effects, for example, reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. The emission factor from solar, wind and hydroelectric power plants is zero.
